You know how you sometimes pick at a scab? Or probe a sore spot over and over? Or take a second or third look at that picture of the infected wound in your textbook? You just can’t help yourself. And that’s why you’ll click on the link at the end of this blog.
Scientists at the University of Salford, U.K., are on a vital quest to determine The World’s Most Unpleasant Sound. You too can be a participant! All you need to do is click the link below and rate the grating, retching, scraping, and crying according to how well they stimulate the negative reinforcement center of your brain. The sense of trepidation just before one hits the “Play” button is really something.
Go on. You know you have to.

Bryan is awesome.
I’m afraid to press the play button, because I worry that they might start playing some songs by “Bright Eyes.”
Or even worse…the Backstreet Boys.
Aw, shucks, Jason. You are far too kind. And good-looking!
What really scares me is what I hear before I hit PLAY. It sounds mostly like faint voices screaming “YOG SOTHOTH COMETH! THE BURNING THREE-LOBED EYE! MAGNA MATER! IAA! IAA!”
Not even close to the worst sound, they should try Niel Young!
You know what SHOULD be the worst sound? Two pieces of Styrofoam rubbing together. It’s not loud or high pitched, but listen to it for a few seconds and you’ll go stark raving mad. No idea why.
^ I hate that too, but I hate the sound of styrofoam rubbing against cardboard even more like when you open a package

Oh, no. Try this- take a fork. Got your fork? Get a china plate. Got your china plate? Now press down hard and SCRAPE as hard as you can!
*twitch* It makes me shudder just THINKING about it. God. It’s like biting wool mittens.
The World’s Most Unpleasant Sound? “I do.”
how bout nails on a chalkboard?
Turn it up! Lowder I say! Lowder!
Glad to hear I am not the only one. The sound of polystyrene or the similar sound of inflated balloons being rubbed by hand makes me have such a strong reaction to it I feel like convulsing. Extreme discomfort and goose bumps when I hear it.
That sound is my audio kryptonite.
