Tesla and Luther Burbank both ascribed outside forces to their discoveries. Burbank said that plants would talk to him and tell him what they would like to become. He went on to create over 1500 new varieties of plants. Tesla,a world-class weirdo, claims the secret of electromagnetism came to him during what sounds like a psychedelic experience. The original Roman notion of “genius” (plural genii)was an outside entity that imparted wisdom to its recipient. https://www.britannica.com/topic/genius-Roman-religion “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

The most important being that the main way that Jones is being introduced, for her “invention” of the vacuum canning process, is incorrect even on the very light explanation given. There’s no effort to describe the process in ANY detail, and what little is said of it is incorrect. As if the author didn’t take any time to actually research the story and the main plot device of the article.

Any good books on this period? or this phenomena?

Amazing how many hoops she had to jump through just because she was a woman…
