When I was a child growing up in the fifties and early sixties, we lived in a development. On my block alone, there were 47 children, and we would roam at will. When it was time for dinner or bed, the fathers whistled for their children, and each father had his own whistle.

It wasn’t a language, but it served as one in a small way.

I heard somewhere that before the tower of Babel incident in the bible, people were talking in the language of birds. Maybe that's where it came from.

Makes one wonder what other forms of communication that humans posses that could be more efficient then speech.. because really, verbal communication is severly hindered.
