From my observations, these ‘historical reconstruction’ documentaries almost always follow the same pattern: (1) idealistic, energetic group sets out to prove how effective the ancient boat/slingshot/aircraft was, or how the ancients chiseled out their Moai/pyramid/sphinx/stonehenge, using only ancient methods/tools. (2) idealistic group fails miserably, stripping them of much idealism and making them snipe and grouse at each other. (3) Their viking boat sinks / roman artillery shoots 47 miserable feet / solid stone blunts their ancient-style copper tools, which while stylish, are still made of . . .copper. (4) Idealistic group cranks up their way-back machine and returns to the present – resort to power tools/backhoe/silicone rubber boat sealing stuff to make their project work. (5) Declare victory with their faith once again restored that they have recreated EXACTLY HOW THE ANCIENTS DID IT….ignoring that in fact the ancient egyptians did not use power chisels to shape out THEIR sphinx….

I actually watched that special as well. It was very humbeling. They just KNEW their design was an improcment. I aslo thought it amazing that one of the biggest problems they had was that they simply no longer had "The skills" to carve the colid Bow arm out of one piece of wood. They just didnt know anyone that could do something like that anymore.

I bit of a lost art I suppose.

Anyway, how did you like the glider?? I couldnt blame the woman for not wanting to fly it.

Interesting story and amazing if true! :)

I have one minor gripe tho. Im not sure whether its an error of memory if quoting from the source or whether its a personal comment by yourself Josh. The last line: "It was not the Wright brothers who developed the first flying machine, but Da Vinci 500 years earlier." This is incorrect. The Wright Bros arent remembered for creating the first flying machine. People had been flying for over a century! The Wrights are remembered for the first 'powered' flight. They had an engine in their aircraft to propel it. Its a subtle yet important difference to your statement. But other than that its a great report.
