It is on nav charts as that is a well used shipping lane and the top is well above the draft of most ships. So I tried to find any mention of the incident and found none. It was a quick search and I will try again more aggressively tomorrow, but in the mean time, anyone point me in the right direction?

I forgot all about until I read the first sentence which jogged my memory. They had to feel silly about their actions after the island washed away.

I vaguely remember a school teacher telling me about it years ago, but thanks for reminding me of the full story.

Thanks Marisa! I can only imagine how those men would be fighting over an island that magically appeared. Very cool.

Michnu said: “Ahhh, a new DI article. Excellent! This one leaves me with questions about how the US Navy could possibly mistake a pile of rocks for a submarine, why they assumed it was Libyan, and what compelled them to attempt to blow it up?”

Everyone knows that in 1987 Libya had developed the world’s most advanced submarine cloaking technology which disguised their ships as stationary submerged geological features…… easy mistake to make

As far as their decision to bomb “them”….I’m sure they had some convincing reasons…. #OIL #Gaddafi #Gulf of Sidra #Economic Sanctions ….or even #WMD
