If I remember correctly they would start with a few dollars then you gave one dollar to your friend and then a second dollar to the person above you in the pyramid then one to the person above them,etc. Something like that.
The person at the top of the pyramid, who started the thing, ended up with the most money.

I also remember chain letters, and my mom always fell for them. My dad was a doctor and understood how you could lose.

Then I think there were similar schemes, like Amway back then that were essentially the same thing.
