Worth a watch.

Tambora exploded in 1815 and was the largest in 10,000 years. The explosion was heard for thousands of miles, and the ash spread over the world, causing “The Year Without a Summer” and global famine.

One was never seen again. I have a vial of fine ash my grandmother saved off his belongings after he was rescued.

Their streets filled with ash, the air was breathable only through respirator masks. Nine months later, their daughter was born, middle name Helena.

Lewiston is about 350 miles east of Mount St. Helens…I can’t imagine having been as close as these men were close to the actual eruption. Frightening and truly amazing.

What a truly great story. I remember watching the eruption on TV as a kid.
